The Rev. Kristen E.M. Kuempel
Bishop Kristen Kuempel was born and raised in Eastern Washington (with a few years in Montana for good measure). She graduated with a degree in Developmental Psychology from Eastern Washington University, and attended seminary at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has worked with congregations in the Twin Cities, North Dakota, Kansas and served most recently as Lead Pastor at First Lutheran Church in Kennewick, Washington.
She is a passionate supporter of campus and outdoor ministries, believing these are two areas where future faith leaders are born--leaders that will be well-equipped to face the changes that are sweeping across our culture and changing our churches in ways we still don't entirely understand. She believes that technology is a tool that can be used to create community among vast distances and across various philosophies, and will use that tool to help foster a needed sense of connection throughout the Eastern Washington-Idaho (+Wyoming!) synod.
The Rev. Phil Misner
Assistant to the Bishop
Phil oversees the call process of the synod as well as works with Bishop Kristen to bring connection and relationship to the congregations of EWAID.
Phil has served the congregations of Peace Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran in Colfax and Endicott for almost eight years. He has also served a six-year term on the EWAID Synod Council, and has served as the Palouse Cluster dean for several years. In addition to the ways he serves within the Synod, he is also one of the key organizers of the Theoprobe continuing education event for lay and rostered leaders from across the country.
