Daily Bread Grants

Grace to you and Peace from God our Creator and from our Lord and Savior, Jesus!

Congratulations to Shalom Ministries in Spokane, Washington who is a recipient of a 2026 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Domestic Hunger Grant for $30,000 over three years! Shalom is supported by St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Spokane.

We live in a food insecure world. One in 11 people, about 720 million are hungry worldwide. As ELCA members, we are called to respond, roll up our sleeves and get to work. God’s Work, Our Hands. It is our call to share with our siblings who may not know where their next meal is coming from.

ELCA World Hunger accompanies neighbors in the United States and throughout the world who are lacking a sustainable supply of healthy food. As we pray in the fourth petition of the prayer our Lord taught us, ‘give us this day our daily bread,’ we remember that this is a plural ask. We are praying that God provides daily bread that reaches every table, every person, with compassion, courage, and faithful action.

ELCA World Hunger offers several methods of supporting those who are food insecure around the world. Domestically, ELCA World Hunger offers two grants, Daily Bread Grants, and Domestic Hunger Grants.

ELCA World Hunger's Daily Bread Grants support congregations and their partners as they work toward a just world where all are fed. ELCA congregations with feeding ministries are eligible to participate. ELCA World Hunger’s Daily Bread Grants are one way our church accompanies communities throughout the United States and Caribbean as they respond to hunger and poverty. These grants provide daily bread for neighbors experiencing hunger by supplementing existing food-based ministries. Daily Bread Grants are for $500.

This year ELCA World Hunger received 1000 applications for Daily Bread Grants and were able to fund over 600 of these very important ministries. All 65 ELCA Synods received at least one Daily Bread Grant.

The Northwest Intermountain Synod received 8 Daily Bread Grants!! Those receiving grants are:

  • Our Saviour’s in Sunnyside

  • Wilbur Community Church in Wilbur

  • Grace in Lewiston

  • Trinity in Pullman

  • Emanuel in Ritzville

  • Emmanuel in Moscow

  • Lake Chelan in Chelan

  • Trinity in Nampa

Thank you to these ministries for their support of those who are food insecure in their communities. You are doing God’s work with your hands!

Every year, ELCA World Hunger also provides the opportunity for ELCA supported ministries to apply for Domestic Hunger Grants. These are awarded for three years with a maximum of $10,000 per year. Domestic Hunger Grants emphasize accompaniment where the ministry offers assistance in overcoming the underlying cause of hunger such as addiction counseling, job training, housing assistance, advocacy training, etc.

This year, Shalom Ministries in Spokane has been selected to receive a Domestic Hunger Grant over three years. They offer a wonderful life-changing ministry in Spokane that provides food and other assistance programs that benefit those in need. To find out more about Shalom, here is their website:
