Is Coaching for You?

Coach! Coach! Put me in the game!

When we think of coaching, we usually think of sports. We have watched the coach on the sideline giving instructions to players or screaming at the ref. In sports the coach is the person who gets the best out of players by giving instructions, choosing the play, or taking an unfortunate player out of the game.

Coaching as a leadership support is very different. In our synod, we have been using coaching for Faithful Innovation, Mission Developers, and First Call Rostered Leaders. An individual or a team works with a coach to…What do coaches do?

Coaching is not about being told what to do. It is not mentoring or consulting. The purpose of coaching is to help an individual or a team to move from where they are to where they want to be. A coach does this through deep listening and asking powerful questions. Again, a coach doesn’t tell you what to do. Rather a coach accompanies you through the process of finding your next best step to…wherever you want to go.

Who can benefit from coaching? Really anyone. But there are times when coaching is particularly helpful. Are you feeling stuck, you don’t know what you are to do next in your ministry or your congregation? Coaching can help. Is your congregation in the midst of a call process? Coaching can help. Are you or your congregation entering into a time of transition--change of call, retirement, capital campaign, or new ministry start? Coaching can help.

The coaches of the Northwest Intermountain Synod are available to help you and/or your congregation discover what is your next most faithful step.
